The building emerges from its urban context, influenced by the steeply pitched roofs and the verticality of the city’s residential buildings, by the monumentality of the upright ornaments of its neo-Gothic churches and the heavy volumes of its Classicist buildings, by the towers that dot its entire skyline and the cranes of its port. The use of glass as the exterior cladding material highlights how the building contrasts with the conditions of its surrounding environment. It creates a bright, transparent and upstanding object. The building’s interiors are simple, large skylights being their utmost defining trait. The great symphonic hall differs from these in that it is a sculpted object, embedded into a barely outlined mineral-like space.

The building contains two concert halls conceived of as two suspended boxes forming in between them a large open lobby lit by skylights. the 951-seat symphonic hall and 195-seat chamber hall are built entirely of concrete for optimum acoustic isolation and light control. A central staircase forms an experiential promenade connecting all the functions and terminating into a large multifunctional space. The iconic double skin system of the shell also serves several important purposes: the two layers create a uniform look across all facades, providing a constant glow of diffused natural light and the air space between the membranes is naturally ventilated to filter out heat and control interior temperatures.

The selected chair for this impressive building was the Perseo model and without any doubt the main challenge was manufacturing a fully upholstered chair that could meet the demanding acoustic levels requested here. So all chairs were produced with different foam thicknesses, inner wooden panels with perforations and mineral wool for a better acoustic behavior. Additionally, the Perseo chairs installed in this venue are 35 to 45cm total envelope as requested by the local Polish safety regulation. Finally we have to outline the innovative solution adopted for the mobile chairs: a single fixing point that once the chair is removed, is totally concealed in the floor.
