The Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai (SISD) is a leading international day and boarding school, educating more than 2,000 students. The 55,000 sq. m of SISD of teaching space, accommodation and support facilities prioritize wellbeing and sustainability. So, filled with natural light, SISD’s spacious classrooms, libraries and laboratories were designed to engage students and encourage learning in a comfortable, healthy interior climate.
The buildings of the SISD complex are the first in the Middle East to be low-energy certified by the MINERGIE Association, Switzerland, a renowned Swiss certificate for new and refurbished low-energy-consumption buildings. The designing team worked to optimize the glazed facade shading and the atrium glazing location to mitigate potential heat gain without compromising daylight levels. Further low energy measures include the use of energy-efficient building fabric, triple glazing, careful selection of lighting and equipment, and solar panels
In addition to energy efficiency and commitment to environmental standards, SISD also wanted to maximise the beauty of its location by maintaining the stunning view of the Dubai skyline. Careful attention has also been paid to the arrangements for the air conditioning system of the atrium and multi-purpose auditorium.
Needless to say the 570 seat telescopic tribune manufactured by Hussey Seatway is the most outstanding element of this venue: a solution that may transform the space within minutes.
The Space Club chair installed in the tribune is a large chair with similar dimensions to those standard ones that can be found in any auditorium. However, its synchro system that folds seat, back and arms together, make it fit into the bleacher. Thus, this auditorium may offer either a standard theatre configuration with big seats or an empty space where the tribune is recessed at the rear of the venue – a wooden wall containing all chairs inside.
