The project for the construction of the headquarters of the Banco de Desarrollo de America Latina (Bank of Development of Latin America), also known as CAF South Region, was awarded to LAPS ARQUITECTOS as a result of a national architectural contest in 2012.
It was decided to establish the headquarters in the location of the old Central Market built in 1865 that, once a new market was built in 1965, suffered a progressive decline until being totally abandoned.
The result is a new building with neutral shapes based on a simple but determined proposal: a central space within the building that would articulate its various uses. So, this new public space would put together all the administrative, cultural and entertainment activities of the building.
The project includes, among other uses, the offices of CAF (auditorium, conference venue, canteen, parkings, etc.) as well as a multiplex of 3 halls for the Cinemateca Uruguaya.
We participated in this project with two chairs: Perseo for the auditorium and Baco Cineplex for the cinema halls. The auditorium requested a chair with pure simple lines so the selected model was the Perseo chair fully upholstered in Burgundy Faux Leather and provided with metal fixing box and silent tipping mechanism thanks to the slow return mechanism built inside.
Meanwhile, the 3 cinema halls were supplied with our popular Baco Cineplex: here with a particular combination of chairs with central pedestals and side supports in the same row to optimize the space. Each of the venues was upholstered in a different colour while all chairs had outer shells for seat & back as well as plastic arms with integrated cup holders.
