Tucked away in a most ordinary looking courtyard of Moscow is the Studio Theatre Oleg Tabakov – the Tabakerka (‘snuffbox’) as both actors and spectators fondly call this cozy basement at Chaplygina Street. The history of this theatre goes back to 1977 when young but already well-known actor Oleg Tabakov recruited a class of 26 students from the university and the next year got permission to occupy a former coal storage facility which they cleaned up and revamped with their own hands, turning this basement into an iconic place that gave birth to some of the best productions of the Moscow theatrical world.

It wasn’t until 1986 that the Tabakerka was granted the status of a theatre; by then the theatre’s main troupe consisted of the graduates of Tabakov’s new enrolment class. Since then, for almost four decades the Studio Theatre has been living a colourful and distinctive life, staging several new performances every year. The auditorium was recently refurbished in order to accommodate brand new stage equipment as well new chairs.

Our Space Plus model was the correct solution for this special venue. A compact chair of just 15cm envelope with high back and curved stitching – seat and back are synchronised with the movement of the large wooden arm. Due to the particular configuration of the venue, some rows were manufactured with mobile system: groups of chairs mounted on rectangular bases with integrated wheels for easy transportation. Finally, we were required to use a particular combination of three different colours of fabric and silver finish for the metal parts.
